How to Get Cited in AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity: A Practical GEO Guide

What Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) are, how AI search chooses sources, and practical steps to make your content more citable.

Search is no longer only a list of blue links. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot increasingly answer questions directly, with a summary built from several sources. For publishers, the new goal is to be one of the sources those answers cite.

That is what Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) are about: making your content easy for AI systems to find, understand, trust and quote.

GEO vs AEO vs SEO

The terms overlap, and you will see them used interchangeably:

TermFocus
SEORanking pages in traditional search results
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)Structuring content so it can be used as a direct answer, such as featured snippets, voice assistants and AI answers
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)Increasing visibility and citations in AI-generated responses from large language model (LLM) search tools

The important point is that they are not separate disciplines competing for your time. GEO and AEO are built on SEO fundamentals.

How AI search chooses sources

Each platform works differently, and the details change often, but the general pattern is similar:

  1. Retrieval. The system searches an index, either its own or a partner’s (for example, ChatGPT search has used Bing among other sources), to find pages relevant to the question. Some tools break a question into several sub-queries to gather broader coverage.
  2. Selection. It chooses passages that clearly and credibly answer parts of the question.
  3. Synthesis. A language model writes a summary from those passages and attributes some of the information to sources with links.

This means your page usually has to be indexed and retrievable first, and then contain clear, extractable, trustworthy passages that answer specific questions.

Google has stated that there are no special optimizations required to appear in AI Overviews beyond following its normal SEO best practices. In practice, the pages that get cited are the ones that already do the fundamentals exceptionally well.

Practical steps to get cited

1. Make sure AI crawlers and search engines can access your content

  • Confirm your important pages are indexed in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Check your robots.txt. Blocking crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search) or PerplexityBot can prevent your pages from appearing in those tools. Note that Google-Extended controls the use of your content for training Gemini models; it does not control inclusion in Google Search or AI Overviews.
  • Make sure key content is in the HTML, not only loaded by JavaScript after the page renders.

2. Answer questions directly and early

Start sections with a concise, direct answer of one or two sentences, then expand. For example, after a heading like “What is INP?”, the first sentence should define INP clearly. AI systems often extract exactly these kinds of self-contained statements.

3. Structure content for extraction

  • Use descriptive headings phrased the way people ask questions.
  • Use lists for steps and tables for comparisons, specifications and thresholds.
  • Keep paragraphs focused on one idea each.
  • Define terms and entities clearly. See our guide to semantic SEO.

4. Add unique information worth citing

AI answers prefer content that adds something: original data, first-hand testing, expert opinion, concrete examples and specific numbers. If your page only repeats what ten other pages say, there is little reason to cite it over them.

5. Show credibility

  • Use clear authorship with real credentials and experience.
  • Cite primary sources for facts and statistics.
  • Show visible “last updated” dates, and keep facts current.
  • Keep consistent information about your brand across your site, profiles and directories.

6. Build brand mentions across the web

AI systems learn about entities from many sources. Being mentioned in reputable publications, industry roundups, communities and reviews makes your brand a recognized entity in your space. This is where digital PR and link building support GEO directly.

7. Use structured data

Accurate schema markup, such as Organization, Person, Article, Product and BreadcrumbList, gives search engines explicit facts about your content and brand. It supports understanding, even though it is not a guaranteed route into AI answers.

How to measure GEO

Measurement is still maturing, but you can track:

  • Referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics, from sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
  • Search Console performance. AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is included in your overall Google Search data.
  • Manual and tool-based prompt tracking. Regularly ask the questions your audience asks and record whether, and how, your brand is cited.
  • Branded search growth, which often rises as more people see your brand in AI answers.

Myths to ignore

  • “You need an llms.txt file to appear in AI search.” It is a proposed convention, not a standard that major AI search products have committed to using for citations. It does no harm, but do not expect it to change visibility on its own.
  • “GEO replaces SEO.” Most AI search tools retrieve from search indexes. Strong SEO is the foundation.
  • “Writing for AI means writing robotic content.” Clear, well-structured, human writing is exactly what both readers and AI systems prefer.

Key takeaways

To get cited in AI search, be retrievable, be clear and be worth quoting. Make sure crawlers can access your pages, answer questions directly with well-structured content, add original insight, and build a credible, recognized brand. Everything that makes you the best result in traditional search also makes you a stronger candidate for the answers AI systems write. Explore more in our GEO / AEO topic.
